Three years after the breakup of the legendary Dinosaur Jr.,
singer/guitarist J Mascis has completed his first album of all original solo
material under the name of J Mascis and the Fog. According to the Ultimatum
Music website, Mascis has recorded 11 new tracks at his own Bob's Studio in
Amherst, Massachusetts. During the completion of the album, entitled More
Light, Mascis enlisted former My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields.
Fresh from recording and touring with Primal Scream, Shields lent a hand in
engineering the new album and even played on a few tracks. Considering both
guitarists' obsessions with guitar noise, the album will hopefully pack some
of the sonic flavor of the classic Dinosaur Jr. material.
More Light should be available sometime in October, but the first single,
"Where'd You Go?" (not to be confused with a similarly titled Dinosaur Jr.
LP) will be hitting college radio stations during September. Mascis will
then begin a small tour during October and November, and a headlining tour
in January. Currently there is no mention of an appearance by Kevin Shields
at any of the live dates, but there's no telling what surprises are in
store.
