You're blinkered idealistic view of the country is endlessly tiresome.
Point 1: My analysis of the degree to which people in this country do not
think for themselves is based on my experience of people in this country.
This is of course represented in the media, but it is realised in my every
day life.

The Sun sells about 4m copies. Read by *maybe* 10m tops. That's 20% of the
population.
The Independent is dreadful.

And Des's point is, which are people actually doing? It seems the majority
of people speaking out are doing the latter.
