I appreciate that perhaps you're just taking the contrary stance to Mr
Mailer, but surely there's a 'third way'(copyright T.Blair)?

"More Civilised Societies"(tm) *seem* to have a greater awareness of and
appreciation for their family (immediate and extended). But that's not to
say they automatically accept all such members regardless. If Uncle Lenny
creeps upstairs with Little Natasha, Uncle Lenny is hardly likely to be
invited round for supper next weekend. But if Uncle Len is just a bit of a
bore, or has outdated ideals, or smells of piss he's unlikely to be
castigated.

I don't see much difference between how your family reacted to Granny's
demise, compared to a family from a "More Civilised Society"(tm). Although
you didn't much like her, you still accepted that she was 'family' and
stood by her when she needed you most.

Love/fondness/appreciation/acceptance of one's family can hardly be
described as a 'bad thing'? Surely it's a part of the Christian rhetoric?

 - I don't mean to bash you over the head with Christianity, as I'm not
sure it really has any place in this argument, other than MCS's tend to
have a stronger link to religion also.

Of course all of this is just sweeping generalisations. So you're wrong.
I'm wrong. We all scream for ice.cream.org

Cheers,
Tom.
