Re: [b] -- The BRAIN
To the lay observer, I doubt there is an apparent difference. Perhaps the
qualifier for nailbiting as a nervous habit is eating the chippings: do you
do that, and possibly chew them as well, making a horrible clicking noise?
And on a similar theme: eating bogies, repellent or fun?

using your teeth to bite them off?
Biting one's nails is a phrase used to describe the nervous or compulsive
habit of gnawing away on finger nails, almost unconsciously. It is a
continuous process, causing people to have no nails, and eventually chew
down to their elbows.
Mine is a practical solution to a real problem - nails becoming too long.
Scissors are clumsy and pointy, and as such I'm not allowed to use them
without the supervision of an adult. Biting them off is a quick and simple
way to shorten them when the occasion is right.
But I will quite happily do it in public without apology.
